How Do I Make My Backpack Water-Resistant?

You can make your backpack water-resistant in a couple of different ways. First, you can choose a lining for your pack. Second, you can use Nikwax Tents. And third, you can consider Solar Proof gear. While these methods are not the fastest or easiest, they result in a more weather-resistant pack.

Laminated Fabrics

Backpacks that are made with laminated fabrics are waterproof and water-resistant. These fabrics are often made of nylon and are designed so that water beads off and does not penetrate them. This makes them water-resistant up to 10,000mm. These fabrics are also made with a "right side" finish to help prevent them from getting wet.

One type of laminated fabric is oilcloth. This fabric is available at most fabric stores. It's printed cotton canvas with a PU coating on it. A similar fabric is waxed canvas, which is made from cotton canvas impregnated with wax and is water-resistant. Both types of laminated fabrics are good for the outside of a backpack but should not be used as the lining.

Rucksack Liners

Keeping your hiking gear dry is extremely important, and a pack liner or pack cover is an excellent option. Backpack liners are lightweight and don't add much weight to your pack. You can also use trash bags to line your backpack, but make sure they're dry before you pack them.

Backpack liners come in many different styles. Some are waterproof and able to keep your tools and other belongings safe from water and other materials. Others are more flexible. They can accommodate anything you could put in other types of stuff sacks, including rudimentary clothing for emergencies.

Nikwax Tent

Using Nikwax tent and gear spray will protect your tent from rain and damage and also provide UV protection. It is important to clean your tent on a regular basis to ensure that it is as waterproof as possible. Alternatively, you can buy a comparable product like Scotchgard Outdoor Water Shield and follow the directions carefully.

Nikwax products also help restore water repellency to older and worn gear. It offers several different options, including a spray on product called Nikwax Tech Wash for water-repellent gear. It also offers UV protection and is great for tents and backpacks. Water repellent is good against rain.

Gear Solar Proof

You'll probably want to protect your backpack against the elements by using a waterproof coating. Nikwax Tent & Gear SolarProof is a high-performance waterproofing and UV blocker. This special coating applies to both dry and wet fabrics to prevent water from penetrating and causing damage.

Sprays

Water-repellent fabric is available on a wide range of backpacks and other backpack-like items. These are usually made of thick, durable nylon fabrics coated with water repellent chemicals. Generally, water-repellent nylon is ripstop nylon, which is a stronger material than ordinary nylon and has reinforced threads interwoven in a crosshatch pattern. This fabric is water-resistant and resists damage caused by sunlight and heat.

Water-resistant or waterproof backpacks can also benefit from a waterproofing spray. While this doesn't completely waterproof a pack, it can add a layer of protection that can withstand light rain. However, this water-repellent treatment only works if the pack is made from water-resistant materials. Cotton drawstring bags, for example, won't hold up to this treatment.

Sea to Summit Backpacks

A great feature of Sea to Summit backpacks is their water-resistant construction. While the standard models are water-resistant, there are a few ways to make yours even more resistant to the elements. Keeping your gear dry is essential no matter where you go, and a waterproof pack will help keep your belongings dry. The next time you're on a long hike, consider investing in a waterproof backpack.

One way to make your Sea to Summit backpacks water-resistant is to buy a waterproof liner. These come in a variety of sizes and weight next to nothing. They help protect your gear from soaking, while still allowing you to access the rest of your gear in accessory pockets.
