If you're looking for a sport to participate in this winter season, you might want to think about something a little different than skiing. If you're looking for something a bit more athletic, you might want to check out a sport such as skibobbing. Alternatively, if you're into speed sports, you might want to try out short-track speed skating.
Biathlon
Biathlon is a mixed sport that combines cross-country skiing and riflery. Competitors ski for a set distance, and then shoot at targets. There are eight different types of biathlon races. These include:
Traditionally, biathlon has a men's race and a women's race. Each country can send two to six athletes to compete in the event. The number of competitors depends on the country's IBU rankings. For example, the top-ranked country in the world for men is Norway, while France and Finland have the highest numbers for women.
To qualify for the Olympics, biathletes must participate in at least two eligible biathlon events, and not have achieved more than 180 IBU points. In addition, they must have two top-half finishes in the Junior World Cup.
Yukigassen
Yukigassen is a Japanese snowball fight. It is played by two teams of seven players on a specially designed court. The goal of the game is to score a point and capture the other team's flag.
Typically, a Yukigassen tournament includes three 3-minute sets. A team that wins the first two sections wins the contest. If a team loses one or both of these sections, it can be eliminated.
This type of sport has gained popularity in the recent years. Many countries around the world are organizing Yukigassen events. For example, Finland and Norway host tournaments on a regular basis.
Although it is a popular winter pastime in Japan, it wasn't made an official sport until the last decade or so. However, it is still being played in many other places, including Canada, Australia, and Sweden.
Skibobbing
Ski bobbing is a winter sport in which a person rides a bicycle-type frame attached to skis. Although not as popular in the United States as it is in Europe, it is a fun activity for those who love winter sports.
In the mid-1950s, a bike-type structure connected to skis began to be used in the Alps as a means of transportation. This device was patented by J.C. Stevens in 1892, and was soon popular as a form of transportation.
After World War II, the popularity of skibobbing grew and spread to France, Italy, and Czechoslovakia. It also came to the United States in the 1950s.
Skeleton
Skeleton is one of the weirdest winter sports in the Olympics. The sport is a variation on bobsleigh, which is a sled race that takes place on an ice track. A skeleton racer jumps into the sled, hangs his or her feet off the back and races at speeds of over 90 miles per hour.
There are two types of sleds in skeleton: steel and fiberglass. They vary in length, from 31 inches to 47 inches. Each sled has two runners that are placed on the sled's frame. These runners are used to help the sled gain speed and direction.
The sleds that are used in skeleton racing have no brakes. Instead, the athletes have to use slight movements of their shoulders and knees to control the direction and speed of the sled.
Short-track Speed Skating
Speed skating is a winter sport involving a fast paced race over ice. The races can be held on a 400-meter oval or a 111-meter track. Unlike long-track speed skating, short-track speed skating has fewer opportunities for contact with other skaters.
Each speed skating event has its own unique rules. Two or more skaters may compete in each race. In each race, the top two finishers advance to the next round.
Speed skating athletes do not wear helmets. They use clap skates, which are hinged to the front of their boots. Clap skates are faster and allow the athlete to maintain maximum contact with the ice.
Curling
Curling is one of the weirdest winter sports you can find. It is a bit like bowling on ice. However, unlike bowling, you can slide a large granite stone across the ice, using a special technique.
The most basic description of curling is that it involves four players on each team. Each player is equipped with a pair of special curling shoes with a sole that grips the ice. They also have a brush to help them clean the ice.
For the most part, the game is played over ten ends. Some teams will also use hand signals to indicate what they are attempting to accomplish.
