Well, here is the perfect boot for all adrenaline junkies! We love this shoe because it is so good when it comes to ice climbing, but not only that - you will make a terrific choice if you choose it for rock climbing as well. It is definitely one of our favorite boots when it comes to warmth. This latest model has been improved with a flap that goes behind the zipper that is now waterproof. You already know how convenient it is to have your feet warm and dry while climbing and these boots will provide you with that.

What We Liked!
  • super warm

  • water-repellent gaiter
  • BOA Fit System
What We Didn't Like

Besides keeping your feet warm, these boots are also super light and feature the BOA fit system. It enables fast changes (and saves your time), and offers great power and uncompromising precision. This system had been field tested and will perform in any conditions so you can make adjustments without taking your gloves off.

The G5 Evo features Gore-Tex Infinium Thermium Insulation placed over the toe area to ensure the heat is trapped even in the coldest weather conditions. So if you are looking for boots for high-altitude mountaineering or ice climbing, these would be the best choice!

This is another awesome choice for your extreme winter activities: ice climbing and mountaineering. It is designed as a technical boot for seriously cold weather conditions. Besides that, we have noticed these boots are very lightweight and fit amazingly. It felt like these were on the wider side because I had lots of room in the toe-box which made them cozy. At the same time, they ensured a close fit and fit snuggly around the heel. If you need boots that are light and offer warmth & flexibility (all important when it comes to climbing), then this boot is going to be your choice.

What We Liked!
  • lightweight
  • water-resistant
  • great fit
  • excellent for climbing
What We Didn't Like
  • not completely waterproof

When it comes to warmth, these didn't disappoint. They are supergaiter boots, so it was expected that they'll be super warm (compared to regular single boots). There is Primaloft Insulation integrated into the design, and synthetic is a way to go when you need proper insulation in shoes. Scarpa Phantom features waterproof zip and a fast lock dual system on the inside. They are compatible with automatic crampons.

I own this model and I must admit that I was a bit suspicious about their durability and support. But they scored pretty high on every test and every terrain (and I put them through a lot of different conditions). They are just amazing - light and stable at the same time. They are crampon-compatible (semi-automatic) and since they are lightweight they make a great option for ice climbing. I found them extremely comfortable and roomy, but would recommend trying them on before purchasing if you have wide feet.

What We Liked!
  • comfy & warm
  • durable
  • stable
What We Didn't Like
  • they can feel stiff in the beginning

Salewa Rapace Goretex boots feature Vibram outsole and offer some solid traction suited for ice and rocky terrains as well. We should mention the 3F system which improves breathability in wet conditions and makes wearing these snow shoes very enjoyable. MFF+ stands for Multi Fit Footbed + and offers interchangeable layers for enhanced adjustments. These boots are designed for a warm, dry and comfortable climbing experience. There is also Eva midsole which gives that extra cushioning and absorbs shocks.

4. LA SPORTIVA Nepal Cube GTX

The Nepal Cube is ideal for mountaineering and ice climbing and represents a true mountaineering boot. These boots are extra light and have exceptional thermal qualities.

The lightweight feature is achieved by the minimized weight of the sole. These La Sportiva boots are using Carbon Tech honeycomb, a thermal footbed, and mini steel parts.

They are extremely comfortable to wear thanks to the Gore-Tex Insulated Comfort lining which provides breathability and water resistance.

Let's go straight to the point-these are not lightweight boots! The Nepal Cube model has to be one of the heaviest pairs we have tested. It is probably because of the outsole, but then it adds to stability. They are pretty durable and stable, and showed great performance for ice climbing activities (not the best option for other types of climbing though). These are definitely a winner when it comes to front-pointing, they are super strong and easy on the calves.

What We Liked!
  • great for ice climbing
  • 3D Flex ankle
  • breathable and insulated
  • Vibram sole
What We Didn't Like
  • really heavy
  • not the warmest boots

Crampon compatibility goes from non-automatic, semi-automatic to automatic crampons (but still be sure to check it first). When it comes to water resistance, they are pretty solid with their "water limit" at about 7.5 inches. They are not completely waterproof, but are still great for a single boot (and score pretty high for ice climbing). When it comes to lacing, there is nothing innovative or spectacular about it, it is easy to work with and user-friendly.

This Arc'Teryx model is a double boot designed for harsh winter. The high price of these shoes is something to think about, but if you need a snow boot for an ice climbing trip this one is worth the money. It is very durable and really amazing when it comes to waterproof features. It is ideal if you are planning a multi-night trip out in the winter freezing temperatures. If there is one thing I can say about these boots it is that they are reliable and won't let you down. They have a removable liner and are sure to keep you warm and dry.

What We Liked!
  • reliable
  • waterproof & warm
  • removable liner
  • Velcro ankle straps
What We Didn't Like
  • high price
  • not the most supportive boots for front pointing

These Acrux AR boots are maybe the lightest double boots you can find. This makes them super convenient for climbing since it will make the whole experience more enjoyable and comfortable. Another thing that we loved about this model is that it features a velcro ankle strap. This way you can customize and adjust the strap according to your needs and activities (just loosen the strap to reach optimal ankle flexibility).

With the sock-alike inner boot, this Arc'Teryx is super protective, so be sure that your feet are going to stay warm. They will also stay dry, because this is one really incredible waterproof boot. The only way to get your feet wet is to actually jump into a lake; they have a Gore-tex shell and a waterproof zipper. One thing though, we wish this boot could offer more stability and support when it comes to front-pointing.

These single leather alpine boots are compatible with automatic and semi-automatic crampons. They have a cuff gaiter designed to protect your feet and offer great performance on the snow and ice. The TPU ankle support is constructed to provide support and stability and GTX insulation is there for your comfort and warmth. It is made of a combination of leather & synthetic materials and features a Vibram outsole. The weight of a single boot is 1lb 15.5oz (our colleague wears size 42).

What We Liked!
  • good ice performance
  • the easy lacing system
  • waterproof
What We Didn't Like
  • a bit heavy
  • not the warmest option

When it comes to warmth, these are nothing spectacular, I would put them somewhere in between. They perform pretty okay, they protect better than some lighter boots, but the super-gaiter boots are simply warmer and better when it comes to weather resistance. Thanks to the materials, these boots are built to last and are very durable. They also showed as pretty good and reliable on ice, so they get a thumbs up for ice climbing activities. There is also solid waterproof ability ( the "water limit" was set to 19 cm which is satisfying).

Well, this is a model that will surely catch your eye. The modern and one-of-a-kind design is really something to admire. It is created with ice climbing competitions in mind and adapted to race requirements. It is suitable for Black Diamond crampons and features a Vibram® XS-grip2 heel. These boots are all you are going to need if you are a dedicated ice climber. They are super light and made for unrivaled performance on the ice.

What We Liked!
  • precise
  • not bulky
  • lightweight
  • specialized for ice climbing
What We Didn't Like
  • not super warm
  • hard to do more than ice climbing

The carbon midsole is there to make the fitting of the Cassin DRY crampons easy and fast. If you are not familiar with these, let me tell you it is because this term is reserved for top-level ice-climbing competitions. Cassin Dry crampons are bolt-on (screw-on) crampons.

This model is the best option for extra pro ice climbers that love super-technical ice routes. The Mega Ice boots are reduced of any unnecessary weight and are easy to wear. They are not as warm, due to their super light feature, but are really water resistant. With built-in crampons, these shoes will give you all the comfort and stability you need on ice, but they will not do as much in any other activity, so keep that in mind as well.

These boots are stable and grip tightly. At the same time, they manage to be comfortable and pretty breathable. The La Sportiva Trango Tower Extreme GTX boot is maybe the best choice for beginners. Why is that? Well, first of all, there is a very affordable price, which makes sense if you have just entered the ice climbing world. It is also relatively warm (but I wouldn't recommend it for some extremely low temperatures) and gets the job done

This boot is not heavily insulated, so you can wear it on warmer days without worrying your feet will get all sweaty so you can concentrate on the techniques and learning ice climbing.

What We Liked!
  • not heavy
  • great for climbing & hiking
  • Gore-Tex
What We Didn't Like
  • not so warm
  • not enough calf support

They are good for everything, but are not spectacular in any specific area. This doesn't make them any less desirable. The good pricing and a little above-average performance make them a solid choice for a novice. These boots will still keep your feet warm for most winter days. When it comes to waterproofing, there is Gore-Tex to keep your feet dry. They are comfortable, super light, stable and safe and those are the most important features when you are just starting out.

Mammut Taiss Light Mid GTX are amazing boots designed for mountaineering and alpine terrain. They are the lightest crampon-compatible mountaineering boot there is (with only 550 gr!). A good combination of materials and technology makes these shoes durable, light and functional.

The Vibram sole on this pair is thinner than regular, but the dampening quality stays unchanged. These boots look good and are super comfortable as they feature the Mammut Georganic®3D technology.

What We Liked!

What We Didn't Like
  • not for wide feet

The Taiss boot is a B2 type (compatible with semi-automatic crampons). The PU wedge midsole adds durability (it won't get compressed as EVA foam). This model features a two-step lacing technology that is extremely user-friendly and convenient. What it means to you is that you can set the flexibility level between your ankle and lower foot (if you want to take a hike, you can just loosen the ankle part for more freedom in movement or make it tight when climbing).

Buyers Guide: How To Choose Boots For Ice Climbing?

man ice climbing

Ice climbing is an exhilarating but potentially dangerous activity, which is why it’s essential to take the necessary safety measures. One of the most important pieces of equipment for any ice climber is a good pair of ice boots.

Ice boots provide the necessary protection, support, and grip needed to safely tackle an icy ascent. But with so many different types of ice boots on the market, it can be difficult to know which ones are right for you.

In this Buyers Guide, we’ll discuss the basic terminology and the key features to look for when choosing the best ice boots for your next ice-climbing adventure.

Why Are Boots So Important For Climbing?

It's not hard to answer this question. As for any winter sport, you will need the best equipment to ensure your safety and success. One of the most important pieces of ice climbing gear is the right pair of boots, and it’s essential to get the right fit and features for the job.

The right pair of boots will provide you with support and stability, allowing you to keep a good balance while climbing. They’ll also provide insulation to keep your feet warm and dry, and they’ll have a good grip on icy surfaces to minimize the risk of slips and falls.

Mountaineering Boot Categories

high altitude
  • High Altitude-Harsh Cold

High altitude mountaineering boot is specifically designed for extreme cold weather and icy conditions. This boot is crafted from durable materials such as leather or synthetic leather, and features a waterproof membrane that keeps your feet dry and warm.

This is typically a double boot and it also has a high ankle support to protect your feet from injury and provide stability on slippery surfaces. The soles of these mountaineering shoes are reinforced with rubber for better traction on icy surfaces, and the toe box is reinforced for better protection.

  • Low Altitude-Moderate Cold

For this type of mountaineering, a light single boot would do the job. This mountaineering footwear is designed to be lightweight and flexible, allowing for more agility and control when navigating difficult terrain. These boots feature a waterproof membrane to keep feet dry and warm, and a rugged sole for superior traction on icy surfaces.

Single Climbing Boots vs. Double Climbing Boots

double boot

The main difference between a single and a double climbing boot is the inner liner. Alpine single boot has none, which makes it super light, but also not so warm. These boots are typically the lightest mountaineering boots. A technical single boot will offer more flexibility and can be a great choice for shorter periods in cold weather.

On the other end, there are double boots that have that inner liner and also more insulation in general. This makes them a heavier option, but at the same time more suitable for longer times on snow and mountain trips.

Leather & Synthetics: Best Shell Materials

  • Leather is one of the most common materials used in the production of climbing boots. The leather shell of the boot helps to protect the foot from the cold and wet elements that are encountered when ice climbing. The leather also provides a good amount of support and stability, which is essential for a successful climb.

Also, the leather helps to keep the foot warm and comfortable, while also providing a good grip on the ice. The leather shell of the ice climbing boot also helps to absorb shock and provide cushioning, so that the foot is not subjected to too much stress. All in all, leather is an excellent material for an ice-climbing boot, as it provides protection, support, and comfort.

  • leather vs synthetic

Synthetic ice climbing boots are becoming increasingly popular due to their lightweight design and versatility. The synthetic shell of these boots is designed to provide a snug fit and better performance on the ice. The synthetic material is also more breathable than traditional leather boots, allowing for greater temperature control and comfort.

The lightweight design of these boots makes them ideal for long hikes and extended trips.

Additionally, synthetic materials are often more durable than leather, making them a great choice for frequent use. Synthetic ice climbing boots are a great choice for those who want to stay light on their feet while tackling icy terrain.

Boots Weight & Warmth

When it comes to weight, ice climbing footwear should check two criteria: to be both lightweight and warm. Unfortunately, these two features of a boot are usually in negative correlation; the lighter the boot, the less insulation and warmth it will provide. An ice climbing boot needs to weigh enough to allow for agility and technical movement, but also warm enough to protect from the elements.

The most effective ice climbing boots are made from lightweight materials like synthetic fabrics, which have the added benefit of being waterproof, and are insulated with materials like Thinsulate or Primaloft. The perfect ice climbing boot must be able to strike a balance between weight and warmth, ensuring the climber can move quickly and safely. Lately, there are more and more models of ice climbing boots that are lightweight and warm, thanks to upgraded and innovative technology.

crampons

Crampon Compatibility

  • Automatic

Automatic crampon is designed to be lightweight and easy to use, with a simple locking mechanism that attaches it to the boot. The crampons are made from high-quality steel, ensuring that they can withstand the toughest conditions. Additionally, they feature several spikes that provide excellent traction and grip on icy surfaces (great for ice climbing).

  • Semi-automatic (Hybrid)

Semi-automatic crampon is the most popular type of crampon and is compatible with most ice climbing boots. It features a heel lever that allows you to easily secure the crampon to the boot, and it also has adjustable straps that provide a secure fit. The semi-automatic crampons are designed to be compatible with a variety of ice climbing boots, including those with a rigid sole, as well as those with a more flexible sole.

  • Strap-on

Strap-on crampons is made to be compatible with virtually any type of climbing boot. It is lightweight, easy to attach and can provide a somewhat secure grip on a variety of surfaces. Although strap-on crampons are adjustable and easy to use, I wouldn't recommend them for ice climbing since they cannot offer the stability and support that you surely need.

Stiffness

You definitely need a stiff climbing boot that will grip tightly to provide more support. But you usually need your boot for more than just climbing the ice (for hiking or maybe skiing). The latest models are having a dual system of lacing (upper and lower), where you use laces to make the grip tight or loose depending on the activity. This way, you can loose an ankle part a bit, to make the boot more comfortable for walking.

Underfoot stiffness is also something to think about when deciding which boots to get. If you want to do more technical ice climbing then the best option would be some super stiff boots. If you want to do low-altitude mountaineering then a less stiff boot would do the job.

bootsize

Boot Fit and Sizing

Having the right fit for your ice-climbing boot is essential for comfort and performance. A boot that is too tight will cause blisters, while a boot that is too loose can cause instability and make it difficult to move efficiently. When fitting an ice climbing boot, it is important to consider the shape of your foot, the width of the boot, and the type of lacing system you prefer.

Generally, you should size your ice climbing boot to be snug and form-fitting. Make sure to try on a few different sizes to find the perfect fit. Additionally, you should also consider the type of lacing system that the boot has, as this will affect the fit and comfort of the boot.

Can You Go Climbing On Ice Wearing Hiking Boots?

crampons on hiking boots

Ice climbing with hiking boots is a challenging and exciting activity.

It requires a good level of physical fitness, knowledge of the terrain and the proper gear. Boots for hiking can be a beneficial part of the ice climbing experience, as they provide the necessary grip and protection against cold temperatures and slippery surfaces. Hiking boots should be waterproof and insulated, and have a good grip on the soles. The boots should also fit snugly and be comfortable, as they will be worn for long periods. Additionally, crampons may be necessary to provide extra grip on the ice.

Ice Footwear Care

Well, this is the part you do not want to skip. Taking care of your ice climbing boots is essential for a successful climb. You need to make sure to clean the boots after each use. Remove any dirt, mud, or debris with a soft brush.

Once the boots are clean, dry them thoroughly, either in the sun or near a heat source (not in direct sun though).

It would be best if you could use a boot dryer if available. It’s important to store the boots in a cool, dry place, away from moisture. If your boots are leather, you can apply a leather conditioner to keep them in good condition. Lastly, inspect your boots for any wear and tear before each use.

Best Tips for Safe Climbing

iceclimbinggear

One of the best pieces of advice we got from experienced ice climbers is to focus more on your feet when climbing the icy mountain. According to them, most beginners' center of attention goes up to their hands when it should be concentrated on the position of their boots and how they grip the ice.

You should also prepare your equipment. The most important piece is a pair of sturdy, well-fitting boots. Ice climbing boots should provide both traction and insulation in cold temperatures.

Additionally, you should always wear a helmet, harness, and crampons. Don't forget to bring a rope, carabiners, and other climbing gear. Finally, make sure you are familiar with the terrain you are climbing. Research the area, check the weather, and be aware of any potential hazards.

FAQs

B2 boots are a popular choice for ice climbers due to their superior grip and insulation. These boots are designed with a waterproof outer shell to keep feet dry and a special rubber sole to provide superior traction on icy surfaces. The boots also feature a special midsole for cushioning and support, and a comfortable inner lining to keep feet warm and dry.

B2 and B3 boots are two different types of cold weather boots that are designed to protect in cold weather conditions. B2 boots are insulated with a combination of wool and synthetic fibers, and have a waterproof rubber sole. Both types of boots are designed to provide superior protection against the elements, but B3 boots offer added protection against extreme cold temperatures. B2 boots are lighter and more flexible than B3 boots, making them ideal for activities that require more agility.

With Vibram boots, you can stay safe and secure on the ice, even in the most extreme conditions. They are an excellent choice for anyone looking for reliable boots for icy surfaces. Additionally, the boots are lightweight and comfortable, so you won't feel weighed down when walking on the ice. The tough rubber sole is designed to grip the icy surface and provide superior grip and traction.

Ski boots are designed to provide the support needed to keep the feet in the proper position while skiing, and that same support can be beneficial while climbing. The stiff soles of ski boots provide great edging power, which is essential for climbing, as well as the stability needed to keep the feet in place. Ski boots also provide good ankle support, which is useful for climbing, as it helps keep the ankles in the proper position and can help prevent injury. In addition, the lacing system of ski boots provides a snug fit that can help keep the feet secure while climbing.

They are certainly a good option. Sometimes super lightweight boots can compromise warmth. In general, they are comfortable, durable, and provide excellent grip and traction. The lightweight design allows for more agility and flexibility when navigating tough terrain and they are usually well insulated, so you do not have to worry about your feet getting cold. Furthermore, they are designed to be breathable, allowing air to circulate and prevent sweat and moisture build-up. Overall, lightweight mountaineering boots are a good choice for anyone looking for a reliable and comfortable boot that can handle most of terrains.

Climbing is an activity that has been around for centuries, and it has evolved into two distinct forms: rock climbing and ice climbing. Rock climbing involves scaling a rock face, using a variety of techniques and equipment to ascend the surface. Ice climbing, on the other hand, is a much more technical and specialized form of climbing. Ice climbing also requires a different technique than rock climbing, as the climber must be able to move quickly and accurately across the surface. Additionally, ice climbing is much more dangerous than rock climbing, as the climber must be aware of the ever-changing conditions of the ice.

When it comes to climbing, single boots are often better than double boots. Single boots are lighter in weight, allowing for more mobility when climbing. Single boots also don't cause as much fatigue on the feet as double boots do (double boots can be quite heavy). Additionally, single boots are better for more technical climbs, as they provide better precision and control. Finally, single boots are generally more durable and last longer than double boots, making them a better investment in the long run. All things considered, single boots are a better choice for climbing than double boots.
