A Taster’s Guide- Favorite Beverages After a Long Day on the Slopes

Whether you know how to ski like an Olympian, or find yourself struggling with (and face planting on) the bunny slope, you need to make sure that you are drinking enough on the slopes and after you go to warm up.

Staying hydrated is always important in any sport.

But if you are skiing, you need to be drinking the right kind of drinks at the right times.

Here’s what you need to know!

The Apres Ski

This is actually a skiing tradition that many people do, especially if skiing is a massive hobby for them. It’s a short party filled with warm drinks and fun as you relax from your day on the slopes and prepare to head back to the hotel for a shower and a hot meal.

Of course, in between dancing around in your ski gear (yes, that is what you do) you will be partaking in a number of beverages in order to ward off the cold. Some of the best you can drink will include:

The Hot Toddy: The hot toddy is a spirit such as whiskey, rum, or brandy, that is mixed with boiling water and either honey or sugar. Then depending on your taste or the recipe, cloves, lemon, or a stick of cinnamon can be added for flavor.

Mulled wine is another favorite, and it is just red wine that is served hot and is made with various mulling spices. If you want something warm without getting drunk, then this is a drink that can be both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. Mulled wine is also drunk around the winter holidays as well.

Spiced apple cider is a drink that even people who do not drink will know about, because it is made of cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and orange slices that are cooked until hot and then added to apple cider. The perfect blend of spices for you after a long ski trip.

Finally, if you want something nice and sweet that is also familiar, you can go for a peppermint patty shooter. These mint and chocolate shots can be made in a wide variety of ways, but the end result is a party in your mouth like no other!

What About On The Slopes?

Sure the Apres Ski is great for afterward, but what about when you are going down the slopes?

You shouldn’t be drinking alcohol and skiing, but you do need to keep your body warm. You need to be drinking warm beverages, such as hot chocolate, apple cider, or even hot water to keep your internal temperature up.

Sports drinks can also be a very good thing to drink while you are skiing because they contain electrolytes. Now if you are into anything sports related, you probably have heard of the word electrolytes before.

warm beverages

While you might have heard about how to get a drink that can replenish electrolytes effectively during the summer when it is hot, our bodies will continue to lose water and electrolytes no matter the temperature.

So get a warm sports drink or some powder that you can mix into your hot drink to keep your body hydrated and moving while you are skiing.

Make sure to drink whenever you have a spare moment, especially because it can be extremely hard to recognize and respond to thirst cues when you are cold.

Additionally, anytime you get inside, you need to be drinking warm beverages as you warm up. Keeping yourself hydrated can be fun, especially if you choose to embrace the tradition of Apres Ski!
